Cornish
Liqueurs and Country Wines are made at Porthallow Vineyard on
the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. The liqueurs come from a long
tradition of contraband spirits smuggled into the Cornish Coves.
The fishermens wives kept watch and if the coast was clear
white washing hung on the line. If there was danger from the
Customs officers red knickers were displayed and the barrels
would be hidden in the sea. When they were fished up later sea
water may have got into the barrels. It was discovered that a
good drink would be made by adding a strong fruit juice and this
was the origin of Blackcurrant Rum and Strawberry Brandy. The
Cornish Liqueurs contain Rum, Brandy, Whisky, Gin or Vodka as
appropriate and are all 18% alcohol (30 proof). They are not
as sweet as other liqueurs and are prized for their lovely fruit
flavours and aroma. The Country Wines are made from fruits and
flowers, vegetables and honey in traditional varieties. These
are made at 14% alcohol so that they will keep after being opened. |
